I spend all weekends at my mother-in-law’s, helping with the housework. Olga Ivanivna lives in a small village in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. Every Saturday, she calls Igor and me to help her. We collected potatoes, made preparations, recently fermented cabbage. But the other day, when we came to pick up vegetable supplies for the winter, my mother-in-law put forward a strange condition.
– Oksana, don’t you want to pay for what you take? She asked suddenly.
I laughed, thinking it was a joke, but then I realized that she was serious.
“I’ve been working on it!” She continued.
“Neither do we!” You saw for yourself how much time we spent in your garden! I objected.
“How?” I’m here with you every Saturday. I even took a vacation to help with the preparations! Do you want money now?
A mother-in-law is not only a hostess. She works as a teacher, teaches several lessons at school. My father-in-law sometimes works part-time by repairing cars. Igor and I have been married for two years. Our income is small: I am an accountant, my husband works as a taxi driver. So far, we rent a small apartment. I hoped that at least we would be able to save on food, because we have our own vegetables. I even wanted to take a couple of cans of seams to my parents. But my mother-in-law, it seems, not only does not want to help her son, but also does not appreciate my work.
“That’s it, I won’t set foot there again!” I’ve had enough! – I said to my husband.
“Why did you break up like that?” Well, let’s pay our mother…
“Are you serious?” How does it feel – I work, and then I also have to pay? Do you think this is normal?
I am sure that I deserve to use what was done in my mother-in-law’s garden. It is not clear how she could have come up with such an idea at all. I spent the whole summer in the gardens, not to beg for food later. And now her husband also supports her. Where is justice? Instead of gratitude for my work, I received reproaches and demands.
Perhaps this is temporary, and we can still reconcile. But so far I have no idea how to restore the relationship. Do you think it’s worth trying or is it better to leave everything as it is?
